Wicked: For Good Review
Lavinia Griffith
The sequel that’s been ridiculously hyped up by both the advertising teams and musical theater fans is here, and opinions are… mixed. Some fans are disappointed by the new movie, claiming the first part was better, others are gushing over absolutely every detail, and a few are just confused as to how they managed to make Jonathan Bailey look like Ryan Reynolds.
Let’s start with where the movie opens. Skipping a few years into the future, Glinda has been turned into a poster girl for the idea of Goodness by Madame Morrible while Fiyero is leading a team of guards to find Elphaba, who has been doing her best to convince the people of Oz that the wizard is a liar. Fans of the musical were no doubt expecting this time jump, but new fans probably less so.
Speaking of the musical, Wicked: For Good does not just include beloved songs from the original soundtrack, but a few new ones. In my personal opinion, the songs were amazing additions to what is probably the best part of the movie. Other allusions were made to the Broadway performances, including Glinda’s outfits, but nothing that would confuse non-musical fans.
The acting was top-tier, with the entire cast giving it their all, especially Ariana and Cynthia. The two leads put so much emotion into their every expression that you can’t help but tear up at least a little. Not to mention the supporting cast shocked fans who were not prepared to see so much passion, especially from Ethan Slater.
The special effects, costuming, and various other details should get some sort of mention. They were good, but nothing worth excessive praise.
All in all, I’d say this movie is 3.5/5 stars, with points docked off because if you go in expecting 5/5, you will definitely leave disappointed.
