Jars of KINDness

By Emelia Persell

You may have seen ASB kids walking around the halls this week with plastic cans, collecting money for this year’s Charity for Change collaboration. This year EWHS is donating to the foundation Kids in Need of Defense (KIND).

KIND was founded in 2008 by Angelina Jolie and the Microsoft Corporation. Their mission statement says they are attempting to create “A world in which children’s rights and well-being are protected as they migrate alone in search of safety”.

At the United States border, some children separated from their parents when immigrating are forced to represent themselves in immigration court. Additionally, these children could be held in detention centers away from their families for an extended period of time until their trial. KIND uses donations to train lawyers to represent these children- for free. Additionally, they work to unite families while maintaining communications between parent and child, and keep children out of detention centers. They have 8 offices nationwide and Internationally, they have served 16,000 children and trained 25,000 attorneys.

KIND also works to address the root causes of immigration by improving children’s rights in Mexico and Central America so that children are forced to immigrate. They lobby for laws supporting children’s rights and ensure that children feel safe in their home countries.

The Charity for Change fundraiser is a class competition. But it is more than that- it is a meaningful fundraiser for a cause near and dear to us. Children are being separated from their parents at the border because they immigrated- and sometimes it isn’t their choice. This is not just a political issue, it is a human rights issue, a children’s rights issue, and something that needs to be stopped. If you find an ASB member this week and donate, you are not just changing a child’s life, you are improving America for all of us. Be KIND.
