Warriors On a Roll at Rubber Chicken

By Taiyo Hayes

On Friday, December 8th, the Warriors basketball teams took on their inter-district rival Meadowdale Mavericks in the annual Rubber Chicken match.

Edmonds-Woodway girls varsity got off to a hot start in the first game of the varsity double-header, and never relinquished their lead. The Warrior girls improved to 3-1 on the season, as they demolished the Mavs 58-25. Both the boys and girls squads came up victorious, as the boys won in a slightly closer and more exciting game with a final score of 76-65. Also, a congratulations to the boys c-team and girls c-team and junior varsity teams on their respective victories against Meadowdale, although boys junior varsity took their first loss of the season.

As tradition dictates, at the halftime of each varsity game, the rubber chicken fling competition took place. A combination of sharpshooting from Vivian Dong and years of rubber chicken experience from Mr. Bennett resulted in a victory for the Warriors, as the Mavericks’ ASB and administrators came up short.

It was a great night for Edmonds-Woodway, who was victorious in nearly every aspect. The atmosphere was electric, with what will probably be the most attended basketball game of the year. Thank you to the pep band and cheerleaders of both schools for adding to the excitement of the game, and supporting their teams in their efforts.

I want to express how impressed I was with the ball handling of our Varsity Boys basketball in the game last night against the giants (two players who are 6′ 9″ and several others way over 6′ tall. After leading early in the game, they fell behind but then pulled up from behind to come within one point of winning. I was amazed at the pace and hustle of our boys (Bol, Eck, Epoch, and others) against such a height advantage of the Shorecrest team.

Our Varsity Girls BB team also performed great in another “squeaker” against undefeated Snohomish Varsity Girls team. We lost by one basket (two points), so I expect both teams to excel in the remaining games of the season.

Thanks to both teams for exciting BB games.
